Elinor Sisulu's biography of Walter and Albertina Sisulu has won the
24th Noma Award for Publishing in Africa, a hat-trick for Cape Town
publishers David Philip. The jury described Walter and Albertina Sisulu.
In Our Lifetime as'a compelling account' of the Sisulus' long and
honourable struggle against apartheid,'told with honesty and
authority'.

Gabonese and Zimbabwean novels received special commendations: Le
Collier de Paille by Khadi Hane (Editions NDZE, Libreville), and The
Stone Virgins by Yvonne Vera (Weaver Press, Harare). Honourable mention
went to three South African titles, Eilande by D Sleigh (Tafelberg,
Kaapstad), Poisonous Plants of South Africa by Ben-Erik van Wyj, Fanie
van Heerden & Bosch van Oudtshoorn (Briza Publications, Pretoria), and
Field Guide to Insects of South Africa by Mike Picker, Charles Griffiths
& Alan Weaving (Struik, Cape Town).

The five-person jury, chaired by Tanzanian publisher Walter Bgoya,
included Professor Peter Katjavivi, Vice-Chancellor of the University of
Namibia, Dr Fatou Keita, University of Cocody, Côte d'Ivoire, Dr Ato
Quayson, University of Cambridge, and Jury Secretary Mary Jay. The
winners were selected from 113 titles in eight languages, submitted by
71 African publishers from 15 countries. The annual $10,000 award is
sponsored by Japanese publishers Kodansha Ltd.
