Nafasi Art Space is a centre for visual contemporary art in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. We are situated at a large industrial plot in Mikocheni B, on the terrain of a former factory. Nafasi has built 6 studios in the old warehouse and 5 on our large plot. Under a makuti roof or in the shadow of the mango tree, artists work and create at Nafasi. We have 15 member artists who come in daily to work in their studios. When their work is ready they can show their art in the gallery.

Nafasi is not only for the artists, but also open to the public. We organize monthly events to get the public acquainted with visual art in Tanzania via exhibitions and public art workshops. These are well attended and attract a mixed crowd from young and old, professionals and amateurs, Tanzanians and expatriates.

Almost monthly we organize exhibitions by Nafasi and invited artists, and every last Saturday of the month we bring together a public art events (Chap Chap) where people participate in introduction workshops for different visual arts forms, e.g. caricature drawing, photography, painting or the use of mixed media. These afternoons are followed by Muziki Wahapahapa, where the Wahapahapa band under Paul Ndunguru (one of our Nafasi artists) invites other musicians, theatre and dance groups to perform for the Nafasi audience. And every third Tuesday of the month we show movies in our Filamu Lounge event, a collaboration with Get Real Training and Mawazo to allow the Tanzanian public to see quality movies from all over the world.

In 2013 we expanded and increased the number of studios and artists to allow more people to benefit from Nafasi Art Space.
