Koundi, a village of some 1200 inhabitants, is situated in Cameroon's East Province, and is rich in timber - the source of almost everyone's income. The villagers, who have organised themselves as a communal organisation, obtain the right to run a small forestry operation. But they wisely realise that the forest isn't a permanent source of income and begin the process of creating something more sustainable - a cacao plantation. Gorgeously shot, KOUNDI AND THE NATIONAL THURSDAY (KOUNDI ET LE JEUDI NATIONAL) is a heartfelt look at life inside a communal society that is negotiating the demands of globalisation and the search for uniquely African solutions.
