Kenyan FIlmmaker

Born in 1980 in Hamburg, Hawa Essuman is the daughter of Ghanaian parents who brought her up in Nairobi, Kenya. After performing in several plays and two films, she switched her attention to the other side of the camera, working as a producer on TV documentaries and adverts.
Her directorial debut came in 2007 for Kenyan TV series MAKUTANO JUNCTION. That same year she wrote and shot her first feature SELFISH?, which was followed by three short films. The 2010 family drama SOUL BOY about a Kenyan boy who tries to save his alcoholic father's soul was Hawa Essuman's second feature film. Her documentary SILAS was screened at the 16th Afrika Film Festival Köln in 2018 and it won the WDR-sponsored audience award for best documentary. She is the patron of the 2019 Afrika Film Festival Köln and team up with Fibby Kioria to present a selection of short films from East Africa.

In 2008, during a workshop for cinema buffs, she got involved in the Project, Soul Boy, her first feature film as a director, which she shot with German director TomTykwer's help.

Hawa Essuman, nacida en 1980, es una artista keniana original de Ghana. Trabaja en el mundo del teatro en Nairobi. En 2007 actuó en la película italiana Piano solo. En 2008, durante un taller para apasionados del cine, se involucró en el proyecto Soul Boy, su primer largo como realizadora, que rodó con la ayuda del director alemán Tom Tykwer.

Hawa ESSUMAN, geboren 1980 in Hamburg als Tochter ghanaischer Eltern, wuchs von frühester Kindheit an in Nairobi, Kenia, auf. Nachdem sie als Schauspielerin in verschiedenen Theaterstücken und zwei Filmen mitgewirkt hatte, wechselte sie als Produzentin von TV-Dokumentationen und Werbeclips hinter die Kamera. Ihr Regiedebüt gab sie 2007 bei der kenianischen Fernsehserie MAKUTANO JUNCTION. Im gleichen Jahr schrieb und inszenierte sie ihren ersten Spielfilm SELFISH?, gefolgt von drei Kurzfilmen. Mit dem Familiendrama SOUL BOY, über einen kenianischen Jungen, der versucht, die Seele seines alkoholkranken Vaters zu retten, legte Hawa Essuman 2010 ihren zweiten Spielfilm vor. 2018 wurde ihre Dokumentation SILAS beim 16. Afrika Film Festival Köln mit dem vom WDR dotierten Publikumspreis für die beste Dokumentation ausgezeichnet. 2019 ist sie Schirmfrau des Festivals und präsentiert zusammen mit Fibby Kioria ausgewählte Kurzfilme aus Ostafrika.
