Every seven years, the Antambahoaka, one of Madagascar's eight ethnic groups, celebrate the Sambatra, "happiness", the ritual ceremony of collective circumcision. It takes place in Mananjary, a village on the southeast coast of the island, 700 km from the capital. Solo Flavien lives in Antananarivo, where he moved with his wife and two children. Despite his meager earnings, he feels it his duty as an Antambahoaka to attend the Sambatra.
