Founded 4000 years ago, Ghadames was nicknamed "THE PEARL OF THE SAHARA" by the Italians who occupied it from 1928 to 1943.
Ghadames then passed under French military control until 1951, the year of Libyan independence.
In 1980, the Libyan authorities created a modern city nearby, where the population of the old city came to settle. Isolated in the middle of the desert, Ghadames was for a long time an essential caravan crossroads in Africa, until its impoverishment, in the 19th century, after the abolition of slavery. Today, an ambitious project plans to revive the old town by restoring the irrigation canals and developing tourism, the only sector that arouses the interest of the very young population of Ghadames.
