A 21st century love story steeped in the Internet and tangled up in history.
Set in Paris in 2009, Flowers of Evil chronicles the love affair that develops between free-wheeling Parisian bellhop Gecko (Rachid Youcef) and the Iranian Anahita (Alice Belaïdi), whose parents have dispatched her from politically tense Tehran to the city of light. However, Anahita is not able to fully commit to Gecko when all she can think of is her friends, her homeland and the revolutionary events unfolding there.
Taking place during the failed Iranian student uprisings of the time, the film convincingly portrays the tensions between Anahita's life in Paris and the life she left behind in Tehran; one that she can still connect with via the multiple channels of the internet. With her head in both worlds, Anahita is caught between the compulsion to constantly check online for news of the protests and the desire to experience the normalcy of her life in Paris and her relationship with Gecko.
With FLOWERS OF EVIL, director Dusa has produced a sophisticated and intimate drama that acknowledges the personal and the political as two sides of the same reality. (Durban Film Festival 2010, Catalog)
